Kaiserslautern Military Community vehicle guide

Shipping a car from Ramstein or Kaiserslautern to the USA during PCS

Start with the entitlement question: Military OneSource says only one personal-use POV may generally be shipped at government expense for OCONUS moves, with possible exceptions. If this is an additional vehicle, confirm your entitlement with the transportation office and treat the private second-POV shipment as its own commercial decision.

A Ramstein or Kaiserslautern origin does not create one fixed shipping price. A useful rate depends on the exact car, the real Germany pickup or turn-in location, the U.S. destination, provider routing, import eligibility and any destination-side inland movement.

Compare the car first — then request the shipping rate

Run the free SHIP / SELL / STORE analysis with your actual vehicle, KMC-area origin and U.S. destination. If SHIP still makes sense, request a provider-verified rate. The verified quote is sent as a PDF with a secure Review & Accept link.

Provider-dependent charges stay pending until verified. Ship or Sell does not invent an instant carrier price.

Government POV shipment and private second-POV shipment are not the same workflow

Military OneSource points customers using the government POV entitlement to PCSmyPOV for vehicle processing center appointments, documentation and turn-in or pickup information. It also says that if you want to make your own arrangements to ship more than one POV, you should contact your local transportation office.

That distinction matters. A government-contracted POV movement has its own entitlement and processing rules. A privately arranged additional vehicle is a commercial quote and booking process. Do not assume that a private carrier's route, price, documents, insurance or turn-in requirements are identical to PCSmyPOV.

What determines a private rate from the Ramstein / Kaiserslautern area?

Exact vehicle

Year, make, model, dimensions, running condition and modifications can change carrier acceptance and pricing.

Exact KMC origin

Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and surrounding communities are not interchangeable with a provider's actual pickup or turn-in point. Use the real origin.

U.S. destination ZIP

The arrival gateway may not be the final destination. The ZIP is needed to understand possible U.S. inland movement.

Shipping method / provider

RoRo, container or another provider-confirmed method can change the operating requirements and cost stack.

Import path

Transport availability and permanent U.S. import eligibility are separate. NHTSA and EPA requirements can change the economics materially.

Timing

Your desired turn-in date, PCS timing and provider capacity can affect when the car can actually enter the shipping process.

Information to have ready before you ask for a rate

See the full POV rate-request guide for the information that makes a quote actionable.

What charges should you look for in the quote?

A verified total is useful only when you know what it covers. Depending on the provider offer, relevant line items can include Germany-side trucking, international transport, fuel or carrier surcharges, export or terminal handling, import or destination handling and U.S. inland delivery. Marine insurance, duty or tax, customs exams, storage, demurrage or special handling may be included, separately priced or excluded.

Ship or Sell's quote workflow therefore separates the verified total, included items and not included / may apply items instead of assuming every possible charge is inside one number. Use the quote inclusions guide before accepting.

Vehicle preparation in the Ramstein area

Ramstein Air Base publishes a vehicle-shipping fact sheet covering vehicle condition and inspection-related preparation and advises customers to check with the local transportation office for the latest restrictions and information. Those official instructions are especially relevant to the government POV process.

For a private second POV: always follow the private provider's written turn-in instructions as the controlling commercial requirement. Government VPC preparation guidance can be useful context, but it is not automatically the private carrier's contract.

Do not book transport before checking U.S. import eligibility

NHTSA explains that vehicles under 25 years old that were not originally manufactured and certified to applicable U.S. safety standards can require an approved import path. EPA emissions requirements are separate. If you bought a Europe-spec vehicle while stationed in Germany, this check can be more important than saving a few hundred dollars on freight.

Use the U.S. import check and 25-year rule guide before treating a transport quote as the final decision.

What Ship or Sell does with a KMC-area case

1 · Decide

Compare SHIP, SELL and STORE using the vehicle, route, PCS duration and available market evidence.

2 · Get the rate

Request a provider-verified private shipping rate for the actual vehicle and destination instead of relying on a generic internet average.

3 · Review & book

Receive the quote PDF, review included/excluded items, accept the current rate securely and continue into the booking workspace.

If shipping does not win the comparison

That is useful information too. A privately shipped second vehicle may make less sense if the Germany sale value is strong, U.S. replacement cost is reasonable, import compliance is difficult or the vehicle would sit unused for a long period. For a local STORE benchmark, see the Kaiserslautern vehicle storage cost guide and Ramstein vehicle storage cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does the military pay to ship my second car from Ramstein?

Military OneSource says only one personal-use POV may generally be shipped at government expense for OCONUS moves, with possible exceptions. Confirm your own entitlement with the local transportation office before paying for a private shipment.

Can I request a private rate from Kaiserslautern to a U.S. city?

Yes. The useful quote should use the actual vehicle, Germany origin and final U.S. destination. Provider, routing, gateway and price still need provider verification.

What changes the rate most?

Vehicle size and modifications, pickup or turn-in location, running condition, U.S. destination, provider method, import path and inland delivery can all affect the total.

Do I need the U.S. ZIP?

It is highly useful. A port or gateway is not necessarily the final destination, so the ZIP helps identify the separate inland leg that may still be required.

How soon can I turn the car in?

A rate alone does not guarantee a turn-in slot. Provider confirmation, documents, capacity and the requested date all matter. See the turn-in timing guide.
